Getting to PEI: Confederation Bridge vs. the Wood Islands Ferry

By Visit Prince Edward Island1 min read

The Confederation Bridge and Wood Islands ferry offer two very different arrivals. The better choice depends on the wider road trip, current service, vehicle and appetite for a scheduled crossing.

Rates, schedules, reservation policies and disruption notices are operator-controlled and can change. Confirm them directly before travel.

Plan your PEI road trip

Add a scenic drive after you arrive

Once your bridge or ferry plans are set, a self-guided drive through Tignish and North Cape can give your island itinerary a clear route and a flexible pace.

Choose the bridge for route flexibility

The bridge links Prince Edward Island with New Brunswick and does not require fitting the drive around a sailing time. Weather and traffic can still affect travel, and the toll arrangement should be checked through the official operator.

Choose the ferry for the route experience

The ferry links Wood Islands with Nova Scotia during its operating season. It can form a useful loop, but the trip depends on the current timetable, capacity, check-in rules and marine conditions.

Compare the full journey

Do not compare only the crossing itself. Include the approach roads, fuel, accommodation, check-in margin and destination on the island.

With a vehicle, bicycle or accessibility need

Check dimensions, bicycle handling, passenger facilities and accessibility directly with the operator. Never assume arrangements are identical between crossings or seasons.

Keep a disruption plan

A simple PEI add-on plan

Cross, settle in, then explore

First confirm your crossing details. Next, leave room for a self-guided drive or a shorter outdoor experience that fits your arrival schedule.

Continue planning

Add one experience to your PEI route

Confirm the bridge or ferry details with the operator, then consider a self-guided drive or a short outdoor activity for the rest of your itinerary.
