Country road through green fields in Prince Edward Island

Cycling & Confederation Trail

Cycling the Confederation Trail Tip to Tip

By Visit Prince Edward Island1 min read

The Confederation Trail follows a former railway route across Prince Edward Island. Its gentler grades make a multi-day crossing approachable, but distance, surface, wind and logistics still require planning.

Use the current official trail map and notices. Route length, detours, surface conditions and permitted uses should be confirmed before departure.

Add another outdoor day

Pair your trail plans with a PEI water adventure

After mapping daily distances and transfers, consider a guided kayaking outing with oyster tasting at Red Head Harbour.

Choose daily distance honestly

Build the itinerary around the least experienced rider, luggage weight and time available for stops. Repeated moderate days are often more enjoyable than a single ambitious target followed by recovery.

Plan the ends before the middle

One-way rides need a transfer, vehicle plan or outfitter arrangement. Confirm bicycle capacity and timing rather than assuming a standard taxi or shuttle can carry the group.

Accommodation and food

Overnight options and meal services may sit away from the trail and can be seasonal. Map those extra kilometres, ask about bicycle storage and carry enough food and water between confirmed stops.

Surface and equipment

A well-maintained bicycle, suitable tyres, lights, a repair kit and weather layers matter even on a rail trail. Helmets and local rules should be reviewed through current official guidance.

Respect shared use

Make room for variety

A simple PEI activity plan

Plan your trail days first, then add one water experience, self-guided driving route or short outdoor activity around your available time.

Before you set out

Add one confirmed activity to your PEI plans

Once your route, accommodation, food stops and transfers are settled, choose a nearby experience that fits the time and energy you have left.
